NCOBA Annual Golf Championship 2007

By Jeremy Harkins

golfAnother year, and not another winner, but the same winner. I am finding it harder to draft this report from each year’s championship when my brother wins. Can we please gather some of our better Old Boy golfers for the 2008 competition.

It was September again and it was a fine day. The usual crowd plus the addition of some new faces which is always a pleasure to see. This year we had a shotgun start to see us all back in the clubhouse for a cold beverage at about the same time.

Tom Luxford finished a superb third for the youngster and then we had the two combatants, Brett Harkins and John Lutteral fighting it our again. Quite remarkable when I recall that these two gents have now shared the honours and the trophy between them for the last 6 years. For 2007 though, Brett Harkins got his hand on the cup first with a net score of 66, and John closely behind on 68, and Tom on 71. The remainder of the field all finished well with almost all with quite respectable scores. And, for those that didn’t, they still had a great day. The straightest drive was won by Denis Greathead and the nearest to the pin, yours truly.

The bonding back at the clubhouse after the event is always a fantastic way to complete a great day. As some say, if you ever have to attend a course, best it’s the golf course. A special note that we should all be proud of is how many secondary schools boast a golf course, let alone a well maintained one, a great clubhouse facility, and fantastic staff. A dream realised well beyond the expectations of the first course venturers on the perimeter of the flats early in the last century.

Thanks to the Nudgee College Centenary Golf Club, John and Judy. Also thanks to the Chalk Hotel and McGuire’s Hotels for their prize donations. I would also like to thank John Lutteral for his efforts in organising the day with me. I do little for this without John’s help. And the master photography on one legal minded Brad Lutteral.

The trophy is currently being looked at for renovation and should be done in the near future. For those that have not seen this, it is a grand old trophy cup with certain distinction of the tradition that it holds. Next years championship has been booked for September again, on Sunday the 14th. Please spread the word and join us for a great day with fellow Old Boys.
