Report on Middle School Project

What is Middle Schooling?

Middle Schooling is an educational concept philosophy or approach to teaching young adolescents. This group is usually characterized as between Years 5 and 9. It is a concept that is gathering momentum, both nationally and internationally and aims to meet the unique needs of children in that age group.

Why are Middle Schooling Initiatives Important?

The purpose behind Middle Schooling is a desire to increase engagement in learning, to improve attitudes to schooling and to ensure that all students experience success and enjoyment in learning.

Research as well as anecdotal teaching experience, shows that at a time when learning should be jumping ahead through Years 5 – 8 young people’s learning often either slows down, stops or even seems to go backwards.

Other research states that the highest incidence of student alienation, disengagement, disruptive behaviour, boredom and disenchantment occurs during the first years of secondary school.

Middle Schooling initiatives, therefore aim to promote students’ sense of identity, belonging and esteem, developing their confidence and capacity to function as autonomous learners. Middle Schooling aims to provide young people with a smooth transition between Years 7 and 8, so they are better positioned to progress on to the senior years of schooling.
