Once again we, the enthusiastic
Old Boy golfers hit the rolling fairways of the College’s
Centenary Golf Course to compete in the Annual Championship.
The attendance of similar numbers to recent years was quite moderate.
The field enjoyed a fantastic day on and off the course.
As we have seen over the last 5 years, two Old Boys have been sharing
the spoils of the trophy. John Lutterall and (my brother I hate
to say) Brett Harkins have unknowingly come home each year with
the honour and the cup. We, the rest of the field are still unsure
of this phenomenon, so to ensure there was nothing untoward going
on, they played this year’s fixture in the same grouping.
And as fate would have it, one of them won again. This
year, congratulations go to Brett Harkins for taking out first
place. No surprises here,
John Lutterall came in second and Peter McCosker finished in third.
We had a non-Old Boy finish in second but official standings are
for the Old Boys. Let it be noted that the day is open to the wider
Nudgee community of family, friends and staff, present and past,
but the main trophy is reserved by tradition exclusively for past
students only.
Other prizes for nearest to the pin and longest drive were awarded
and believe me there was definitely some talent on the day. A few
players showed some extraordinary ball striking with some impressive
drives and close proximity to the pin on the par 3’s. I still
think a longest drive should count if you are just off the fairway!
Many thanks go to McGuire Hotels and to Drummond Golf for
their generosity in donating prizes. On that note, I would like to recommend anyone
into golf to drop into the Fortitude Valley store of Drummond Golf
near the old Montpellier Roundabout and take a look at an impressive
outlet.
The day is always rounded off with a bar tab from the entrance fees and yes we
do hear all the terrible and greatest golf stories of the day a few times. However,
this makes for such a good day with a heap of laughs and a few ales. The trophy
is now to be kept in the Clubhouse Trophy Cabinet for safe keeping for a truly
historical piece of silver ware from such a minor event. There was some talk
on the day about looking at a second trophy for non-Old Boy competitors and this
is being looked into further.
Also we are hoping to get the old 1930’s trophy renovated, as it is currently
looking a little tainted with age.
I would encourage all players from this year to try and bring another player
with them for next year so we can hopefully put an end to the Lutterall/Harkins
winning streak.
The 2007 Championship will be held at the College Centenary Course on
Sunday the 15th September.
I thank all involved for making this year a great day again,
and particularly John Lutterall for his assistance in organising the day. See
you next year. |
