The Australian Government Minister for Vocational and Technical Education, the Hon Gary Hardgrave MP, was the guest of honour at the 12th annual Building and Construction Training Excellence Awards run by Construction Training Queensland.

The awards were presented at a gala dinner at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, with more than 500 guests representing the state’s building and construction industry.Awards were presented in eight categories, including Innovation in Training, Commitment to Training, and Outstanding Training Provider.
A new category, Excellence Award for Schools, was presented to Nudgee College which currently has 102 students completing Certificate I in Construction. Runner-up in the Excellence Award for Schools category was Bundaberg State High School.

“St Joseph’s has been delivering building and construction training for students for the last 15 years and its success in school-based vocational education should be held up as an example for others,” Mr Hardgrave said.“These awards are a fitting recognition of the high standard of training provided by employers, Registered Training Organisations and individuals who have made a significant contribution to skills formation in the building and construction industry in Queensland,” Mr Hardgrave said.

“These winners and runners-up exhibit a commitment to training in an industry which is such a vital contributor to this state’s robust economy.”

The Cubby Houses - are currently unpainted, but will be painted in bright colours. They were built by the Year 12 class - there are actually 13 in total. Two or three will be given away to a charity, either for their own use or as a fundraiser. Any charities interested in obtaining a cubby house can write to the College and include a paragraph about the charity. They will be available for pick up in mid-October. Others are sold for $300, to recoup costs. More will be built by next year’s classes - to a new and updated design!

The school category award was the Master Builders Queensland Excellence Award for Schools.
The nominees were St Edmund’s College Brisbane, Morayfield State High School, William Ross State High School, Burdekin Catholic High School, Corinda State High School, Palm Beach-Currumbin State High School, Northern Beaches State High School, Mabel Park State High School, Patrick’s College Mackay - with St Joseph’s Nudgee College being the winner and Bundaberg State High School runners up.
