Anzac Day celebrations

Story Added : July 2006

On April 24, members for the Nudgee Family gathered to remember Anzac Day and those who had given their lives, their youth and their loved ones to the quest for freedom and our way of life.

A special feature of the day was related to celebrating the 65th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbour, an act which undoubtedly brought America into World War II. As a special feature of this day, the Principal invited all Old Boys who had been in attendance at Nudgee on the day of the Pearl Harbour bombing to attend the remembrance parade and to be the guests of the College on that day.

Also attending were sixteen returned servicemen. These men collectively served in all three arms of the services. Nine students represented family members who had served in Australian conflicts.

Mr Graham Leddie welcomed all to the ceremony which was then controlled by a student group of College Mission Leaders. Robert Ah Chee. Mark Atkinson, Samuel Bain. Damien Chamley, Benjamin Kelland, David Laverty, Thomas Lynch, Bryan McManus, Daniel Nolan, Thomas Rix, Luke Vollert and Mitchell Witt completed this task with dignity and efficiency.

Prayers, Scripture Reading and Laying of Wreaths followed. Group Captain Tony Behm delivered the Anzac Day Address after which the gathering observed one minute’s silence before the Last Post was sounded and the Final Blessing by Father John Kilinko, the College Chaplain.

The Principal, Mr Daryl Hanly thanked all for attending, outlined the importance of such functions in maintaining the heritage of the College and thanked all who had contributed to the planning, organization and delivery of the day. He then invited all of the guests and visitors to gather in Ryan Hall for morning tea.
