27 teams from 19 different schools participated in this
year’s Christian Brothers’ Cricket Week, held at Brisbane’s
Nudgee College from 10 – 17 January.
School boy cricketers and their coaches, managers and supporters
travelled from Charters Towers, Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Melbourne, Sydney,
Goulburn, Canberra, Auckland and Dunedin to participate in the annual
event, now in its 30th year.
“The standard of cricket was extremely high, and there were numerous
games decided in the last few balls of the match,” said Nudgee’s
cricket co-ordinator Matt Hawkins. “All games were played in fantastic
spirit,“ he said.
Kavanagh College from Dunedin won the Shield Division of the event
over St Laurence’s 1. Nudgee 3 was successful in taking out the
Br Dave White Plate in the second division, with a win over St Laurence’s
2.
Australian cricket coach John Buchanan spoke at the closing ceremony,
expressing similar sentiments. He congratulated the boys for being part
of such a good carnival.
Mr Buchanan also spoke about the importance of holding onto dreams and
of working towards those dreams. He presented medallions to the players
selected in the Australasian XI – one of whom was Year 11 Nudgee
boy, Chris Lynn - as well as individual awards. Congratulations Chris!
