When Edward Wallace Deely left Nudgee in 1921 after completing his Junior, he probably never gave thought to where he would be and what he would be doing on his 100th birthday on 08.03.05.Born in Bundaberg in 1905, Wallace as he is generally known lived most of his life in the Bundaberg district to which he returned after leaving Nudgee. Faced with the prospect of seeking a clerical job or returning to his family cane farm near Gin Gin, he chose a life on the land and became involved in both his chosen way of life and his chosen district. He served in a variety of roles within the sugar industry and was Chairman of the Gin Gin Sugar Mill for 18 years. From 1943 to 1971 he was a Councillor for the Kolan Shire Council. In 2000 he moved to Sunset Lodge at the Kepnock Grove Retirement Centre where he is a valued resident universally regarded as a very private and very ‘old world’ gentleman. Always a strong and independent man, Wallace who remained a bachelor is intensely proud of his congratulatory letters and greetings from the Queen and the Prime Minister, Mr Howard. Wallace, by his lifetime contribution to his chosen district and occupation has lived and projected the Nudgee Spirit of ‘Sign of Faith’ and all at Nudgee wish him well. |
